Collagen seems to be the newest supplement being pushed in supplement stores across America. The claims being made are that it is good for skin, hair, that it is a source of protein and amino acids, and that it might help to reduce joint pain.

There isn’t much in the literature that is conclusive about all the claims that are made about the usefulness of collagen, but what one study concluded, might indicate that collagen is good for functional joint pain.

Functional joint pain is when someone has joint pain after use, but there isn’t any loss of mobility. A study released in the journal Applied Physiology Nutrition and Metabolism evaluated athletes and their functional joint pain after taking collagen supplementation.

The researchers wanted to see if taking bovine collagen helped to reduce functional joint pain. They took subjects and put them into two groups. The test group received bovine collagen supplementation, and the other group received a placebo. The researchers then had the athletes engage in their athletic activity, and afterward rate their pain. The researchers also evaluated their joint function.

What they found was that there was a statistically significant decrease in functional joint pain in the test group when compared to the group that received the placebo. They also saw an increase in the functionality of the joints in the athletes who took the collagen supplement.

There are likely good sources and not so good, so the intention over the next couple of episodes is to examine the literature more carefully.
